Same pack size, $221 apart
Put the medium UltraGrid Kakwa next to the medium Southwest 55 and the specs almost cancel out: 30.6 against 30.8 oz, 55 L against 55 L inside, 15 L against 13.4 L outside. The extra $221 buys Hyperlite’s fabric, a fully woven Dyneema composite in place of a PU-coated nylon grid, plus two more torso sizes. Durston’s own premium fabric, Ultra 200X, is woven UHMWPE laminated to a film; it costs $80 more than UltraGrid and adds 0.9 oz. The load ratings are phrased differently: Durston gives a comfort figure (45 lb), Hyperlite a capacity (40 lb).
