Altra Lone Peak 9+ Review: Men’s and Women’s Specs
How we did this: a spec review, not a wear test. We read Altra’s own product pages for the men’s and women’s Lone Peak 9+, checked on 29 Sep 2026, and compared them with the Hoka Speedgoat 7 figures we verified for a separate comparison. We have not worn these shoes.
The Altra Lone Peak 9+ is Altra’s zero-drop trail shoe with its roomiest toe box, now on a Vibram Megagrip outsole. Altra lists the men’s Lone Peak at 11.55 oz per shoe and the women’s at 9.3 oz, both with a 25 mm stack, for $160. This review sets out what those specs mean for hikers.

Altra Lone Peak 9+ review: what the specs tell you
Toe room is the reason to buy it. Altra describes the Lone Peak as having “our roomiest toe box, with plenty of room to help your toes move more freely, and space through the midfoot.” Hikers whose feet swell over long days are the core audience.
Zero drop is the adjustment. Your heel and forefoot sit at the same height. Hikers used to a conventional heel drop may need time for their calves and Achilles tendons to adapt.
25 mm of stack is moderate. That keeps your foot close to the ground for stability on uneven trail, with less foam under the heel than a max-cushion shoe.
The + is the outsole. Altra introduces the 9+ as the Lone Peak “now with a legendary Vibram® Megagrip outsole for fierce grip,” with a revised midsole foam and a ripstop mesh upper.

- Altra’s roomiest toe box
- Vibram Megagrip outsole
- Ripstop mesh upper with no-sew overlays
- Men’s is 1.85 oz heavier than the Speedgoat 7 per shoe
- Zero drop needs an adjustment period
- Less heel cushioning than max-stack shoes
Lone Peak 9+ against the Hoka Speedgoat 7

| Spec (men’s) | Altra Lone Peak 9+ | Hoka Speedgoat 7 |
|---|---|---|

| Drop | 0 mm | 4–5 mm published |
| Stack | 25 mm | 37 mm heel / 32 mm forefoot |

The Speedgoat is 1.85 oz lighter per shoe and puts 12 mm more foam under the heel; the Lone Peak gives more toe room and a flat platform. Full details: Hoka Speedgoat 7 vs Altra Lone Peak 9+.
Lone Peak 9+ against the Xero Mesa Trail II

| Spec (men’s) | Altra Lone Peak 9+ | Xero Mesa Trail II |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | 11.55 oz | 7.8 oz (size 9) |
| Drop | 0 mm | Zero drop |
| Underfoot | 25 mm stack | 3.5 mm lugs on a 3.5 mm TrailFoam layer |
| Price | $160 | $119.99 |
Both are zero drop with a foot-shaped toe box. The difference is how much shoe is under you: Xero builds the Mesa Trail II as a minimalist shoe with a thin FeelTrue sole, 3.75 oz lighter per shoe than the Lone Peak, which gives you 25 mm of stack. On 29 Sep 2026 Xero’s store listed every size of the men’s Mesa Trail II as sold out. Source: Xero Shoes, Mesa Trail II page.
Who should skip the Lone Peak 9+
- Hikers with narrow feet, who may find the toe box too loose.
- Hikers who want maximum cushioning under the heel.
- Anyone switching from boots or high-drop shoes right before a long trip, without time to adapt to zero drop.
