SteriPEN Adventurer vs Katadyn Micropur: Speed vs Weight
How we did this: the SteriPEN figures come from Katadyn’s own Adventurer Opti page and the Micropur figures from SectionHiker’s review of the MP1 tablets (Philip Werner, February 2025), both checked on 30 Sep 2026. We have not field-tested either.
SteriPEN Adventurer vs Katadyn Micropur is speed against weight. The SteriPEN Adventurer Opti treats a liter with UV light in 90 seconds and weighs 103 g (3.6 oz). Micropur MP1 tablets weigh about 0.03 oz each but need 15 minutes for viruses and bacteria and 4 hours for Cryptosporidium. Both are listed as effective against viruses, which the squeeze filters we have covered are not.

Weight over a trip
At 4 liters a day, a 5-day trip needs 20 treatments. At one tablet per quart that is 21 Micropur tablets, about 0.6 oz, against 3.6 oz for the Adventurer Opti, which Katadyn rates for about 50 treatments per battery set, so one set covers it. The tablets stay lighter until you have treated about 115 liters (120 tablets), when their weight matches the pen’s.
Time to drink
This is where the SteriPEN wins. Katadyn lists 90 seconds for a liter. Micropur’s 15 minutes covers viruses and bacteria, but Cryptosporidium takes 4 hours, so tablets suit water you treat ahead of time, such as overnight.
SteriPEN Adventurer Opti

Katadyn describes the Adventurer Opti’s optical sensor as one that “senses water to ensure safe use and effective treatments,” and the sensor doubles as a small flashlight. It runs on two CR123 batteries and needs a container opening of at least 1.75 in, such as a wide-mouth one-liter bottle. Katadyn lists tap and clear water as sources, so prefilter cloudy water.

SectionHiker’s Philip Werner, who says he has used them for close to 15 years, describes the tablets as
“incredibly convenient and fast-acting, neutralizing viruses and bacteria in 15 minutes, giardia in 30 minutes, and cryptosporidium in 4 hours.”
Philip Werner, SectionHiker
Each tablet is individually wrapped, one per quart of water, with chlorine dioxide as the active ingredient.
