High Calorie Backpacking Food: Calories per Ounce, USDA Data

We may earn a commission from links on this page. It never affects our verdicts.

How we did this: every calorie figure comes from the US Department of Agriculture’s FoodData Central database, queried on 29 and 30 Sep 2026, converted from kcal per 100 g to kcal per ounce. Each row links to its USDA entry.

High calorie backpacking food is mostly fat. By USDA’s figures, olive oil carries about 251 kcal per ounce and nuts 160 to 213, against about 107 for oats and 79 for dates. A backpacking meal plan built from the table below reaches about 3,001 kcal in 22 oz of food, 136 kcal per ounce.

How to use calories per ounce

  1. Find kcal per 100 g on the nutrition label or in FoodData Central.
  2. Multiply by 0.2835 to get kcal per ounce.
  3. Weigh your day, not each item. A menu of dense and less dense foods averages out; the day’s total calories divided by its total ounces is the number to track.
  4. Swap the lowest rows first. Replacing 2 oz of dates (about 158 kcal) with 2 oz of macadamia nuts (about 408 kcal) adds 250 kcal at the same weight.

Why fat wins on weight

Fat carries more energy per gram than carbohydrate or protein, which is why the top of the table is oil, nuts and chocolate, and why the dry carbohydrate staples (oats, potato flakes, ramen) sit near 100 to 125 kcal per ounce. Most menus mix both: carbohydrate staples for meals, fat-dense foods to raise the day’s average.

FAQ

What is the highest calorie backpacking food per ounce?
Fat-rich foods. By USDA figures, olive oil is about 251 kcal per ounce, pecans 213 and macadamia nuts 204. Dried fruit is much lower: Medjool dates are about 79.
How do I work out calories per ounce?
Take the calories per 100 g from the nutrition label or USDA's FoodData Central and multiply by 0.2835 (one ounce is 28.35 g). A food with 500 kcal per 100 g carries about 142 kcal per ounce.
How much does 1,000 kcal of food weigh?
It depends on the food: about 4.0 oz of olive oil, 8.0 oz of dry ramen or 12.7 oz of Medjool dates. Our sample day averages 136 kcal per ounce, or about 7.3 oz per 1,000 kcal.
How many calories do I need per day on trail?
That depends on your body, pace, terrain and temperature, so we do not give a single number. Weigh the menu you plan against what you ate on a similar past trip.
Is peanut butter good backpacking food?
By density, yes: USDA lists smooth peanut butter at 598 kcal per 100 g, about 170 kcal per ounce, the same as 70-85% dark chocolate.

The bottom line

For high calorie backpacking food, look at kcal per ounce: olive oil (251), pecans and macadamias (over 200) and peanut butter or dark chocolate (about 170) raise a menu’s average; oats, ramen and potato flakes carry the meals at 100 to 125. Our USDA-built sample day comes to 3,001 kcal in 22 oz.
