Hyperlite vs Zpacks: why 55 L vs 50 L undersells the gap

The two makers count volume differently. Zpacks’ 50 L is everything: a 37 L main body, two 2.5 L side pockets and an 8 L front pocket. Hyperlite lists the Southwest 55’s pack volume as 55 L and its external pockets separately, at 13.4 L. On the makers’ own numbers, the Southwest’s main compartment is far larger. For a bear canister or a winter quilt, that matters more than the 5 L in the names.

FAQ

Hyperlite vs Zpacks: which pack is lighter?
The Zpacks Arc Haul Ultra 50L. Zpacks lists it at 21.4 oz (608 g) in its lightest configuration; Hyperlite lists the Southwest 55 at 30.8 oz (874 g) in size medium, white. That is 9.4 oz apart.
Is the Arc Haul Ultra 50L really smaller than the Southwest 55?
Yes, by more than the names suggest. Zpacks' 50 L includes the pockets: 37 L main body, two 2.5 L side pockets and an 8 L front pocket. Hyperlite lists the Southwest 55 as 55 L of pack volume plus 13.4 L of external volume.
How much weight can each pack carry?
Zpacks says the Arc Haul Ultra 50L carries 30 to 35 lb comfortably and 40 lb at most. Hyperlite rates the Southwest 55 to 40 lb.
Are these packs waterproof?
Both use waterproof fabrics: Zpacks' Ultra 100X is a woven UHMWPE face laminated to a waterproof backing, and Hyperlite describes the Southwest's woven Dyneema as 100% waterproof. Hyperlite tapes the vertical side seams. Water can still get in through a roll-top in long storms, so a light liner is sensible for a down quilt.
Can you remove the frame to save weight?
On the Southwest, yes: Hyperlite says its two contoured aluminum stays are removable. Zpacks does not describe the Arc Haul Ultra’s curved carbon fiber Arc Frame as removable on its product page.

The bottom line

The Arc Haul Ultra 50L wins on weight by 9.4 oz and on price by $21. The Southwest 55 wins on usable space and toughness, and its labels undersell how much larger its main body is.
